Natural and oil surface slicks as microbial habitats in marine systems: A mini review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Natural and oil surface slicks are widespread phenomena at the air-water interface represent visible films with distinct physicochemical biological properties compared to non-slick underlying marine water. Both types of have major functions in nourishing dispersing surface-dwelling micro- macroorganisms, contribute particle generation carbon cycling, known accumulate pollutants. Despite these high frequency environment, little understood considering their microbial inhabitants contributions organisms for natural slick establishment, function, ecology. Our mini review summarizes current knowledge life slicks, anthropogenic including gaps perspectives future research. Overall, we aim an increased awareness about existence differentiation between improved reporting events during sampling film seawater from epipelagic zone.

Natural oil slicks fuel surface water microbial activities in the northern Gulf of Mexico
We conducted a series of roller tank incubations with surface seawater from the Green Canyon oil reservoir, northern Gulf of Mexico, amended with either a natural oil slick (GCS-oil) or pristine oil. The goal was to test whether bacterial activities of natural surface water communities facilitate the formation of oil-rich marine snow (oil snow). Although oil snow did not form during any of our ...

When wind speeds are 2-10 m s-1, reflective contrasts in the ocean surface make oil slicks visible to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) under all sky conditions. Neural network analysis of satellite SAR images quantified the magnitude and distribution of surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico from persistent, natural seeps and from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) discharge. This analysis identified 914 nat...
